Shangri-La Not your Average Boarding School
The Youth that attends the Shangri-La Learning Ranch (SLR) come here to become future Leaders of our generation. Although often these individuals are unaware of how to be a leader as they have struggled with self-love and self-respect. Not to mention respect for others. We do this by instilling confidence and allowing them to be surrounded constantly by positive role models who work and mentor side by side these young men. It wasn’t too many years ago when families worked all day together in the fields to earn their keep. Discipline was needed to ensure everyone pulled their weight. Here at the Shangri-La Learning ranch, the students work alongside these positive role models and they begin to emulate the behaviors and actions of these men & women. They also learn the importance of setting appropriate boundaries when it comes to complex issues such as addictions, substance abuse, promiscuity and more. While the data is pragmatic for the impact of leadership programs we have reshaped an industry that believed that the way you get someone to change is through compliance.
Benefits of a Leadership Program
All to often we label other individuals, we say nonverbally that they will not succed and they are a mess up. While self reflection is a positive experience it also can have negative use if the individual sees themself as less than adequte in areas out of their control. All too often we have leaned on medications or various techniques in hopes to acheive greater happiness in life albeit unsuccessful.
Benefits of Co-Ed Programs
There is a large amount of pragmatic and empirical evidence available to support the fact that single- sex programs have a little positive impact. Additionally, there is far more research that suggests that a co-ed environment allows all youth the abilities to learn to set appropriate boundaries in a safe environment rather than fail in the real world.
Phys.org a study produced by the American Psychological Association which revealed that a single-sex education program does not educate girls or boys any better than what can be accomplished in a co-ed environment. Therefore if we are allowing our fears to control us the youth typically respond to that. If the youth do not feel they can be trusted they may even act untrustworthy however if they show the opposite they thrive and excel. We have adapted an industry guidline of P.R.O.M.I.S.E principles which cover areas such as Relationship and Intimacy. Not just how they are similar but how they are different. Understanding that it is okay to have a relationship with a member of the opposite gender and not make it an intimate encounter is a benefit for all individuals especially young men and women wanting to learn.
SLR is different! With our administrative staff of over 20 years of industry knowledge, we have seen first hand where parents looking for a program to give their child real-world experiences and implement discipline and structure. Yet the product that is offered by most schools is one where the staff work in rotating schedule, therefore, creating inconsistency and avoid for stability that a family can bring. These individuals typically live in dormitories with 15-30 other boys which is not a typical living arrangement for any youth. At SLR we see this structure as foreign, nonproductive and labeling to your child. The need we all feel to be in a family environment and a family setting is what places SLR apart from their competition.
How does SLR work? SLR operates as a working ranch where kids and the families they live in are taught first-hand lessons on nature, science, math and English etc. Being able to not only experience something but learning and read about it makes this product more real and more meaningful.
At-risk.org, familyfirstaid.org have provided various examples of issues that parents should consider when evaluating their child’s needs. various issues What issues do we face with struggling or troubled teens?
- Behind in school or unmotivated to participate
- Defiance, obsessive behaviors
- Depression and risk of suicide
- Anxiety or emotional instability
- Tearing others down, bullying and being disrespectful
- Other issues
What aspects make SLR unique?
Unlike most boarding schools which focus on the negative consequences of each student and give demerits much like our failing prisoner systems. SLR focuses on the positive principles of happiness through our proprietary program called Soulegria. This program focuses on discovering individual love and respect by finding true joy in life. Understanding the how fun can lead to happiness or unhappiness. We do this by having the youth and their families keep commitments we make to ourselves usingt a proprietary model called Soulegria P.R.O.M.I.S.E principles. Each letter of the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. principle represents an area that was chosen to specifically deal with our daily needs. This program keeps a well-balanced life and demonstrates what happens when we don’t stay balanced.
